Ramblings of a Diseased Mind

It's not fair, I tell you! Last Wednesday I awoke feeling crappy, and so I took the day off from work in the hopes of nipping it in the bud. It worked...or so I thought. Thursday and Friday I felt great. Then, Saturday morning broke with me feeling like ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag. Sunday I had to run the sound board for a show in St. Pete, but I remained as sedentary as I could before and after in the hopes of knocking this crud out before today. Alas, I feel even worse this morning, and there is too much to do at work for me to take another day off. Oh well, at least there's Pseudophedrine.

In political news, I am starting to think that this economic crisis we find ourselves in genuinely took Wall Street and Pennsylvania Avenue by surprise. Usually the responses to crises seem far too measured and rehearsed for me to believe that they were truly unforeseen. This time I see real fear in the eyes of the politicos. What further convinces me is that the bail out plan actually seems to be a bi-partisan attempt to keep the nation afloat, and most of the lack of accountability that had me truly worried last week has been weeded out. Who'd a thunk that our government would do something right?

As for Sarah Palin, when even Katie Couric can fluster her, it's no wonder that the McCain camp are shielding her from the press. Here's a transcript of part of Couric's interview:
Couric: You've said, quote, "John McCain will reform the way Wall Street does business." Other than supporting stricter regulations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ago, can you give us any more example of his leading the charge for more oversight?

Palin: I think that the example that you just cited, with his warnings two years ago about Fannie and Freddie - that, that's paramount. That's more than a heck of a lot of other senators and representatives did for us.

Couric: But he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.

Palin: He's also known as the maverick though, taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he's been talking about - the need to reform government.

Couric: But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you've said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?

Palin: I can give you examples of things that John McCain has done, that has shown his foresight, his pragmatism, and his leadership abilities. And that is what America needs today.

Couric: I'm just going to ask you one more time - not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation.

Palin: I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you.

You can see the entire interview here.

Finally I'd like to say hello to the members of the Simply Syndicated forums who have dropped by The Corner. Thanks for coming to visit, and please leave a comment should you wish.

Ok, time to try to become semi-human. Peace out, y'all.

Weathereye Strikes Again

Ever wonder how Obama or McCain would stack up against our intrepid Captain? Well, you need wonder no more. Click me.

Just the Facts

While I really have no obligation to remain unbiased toward the presidential campaign, especially since I support Obama, I do try to remain informed as to the shenanigans perpetrated by both parties. In my view all politicians are lying, cheating, vicious weasels who would gladly sell their parents into slavery on Mars if it meant a few more percentage points from The Polls. Unfortunately this means that I vote for the weasel I feel is less likely to hose me, and more likely to hose someone else. Thus I favor Obama. I don't really care if the rich get more taxes, and we've seen that the whole trickle down theory is similar to what the town downstream of the sewage plant gets. However, in the interest of furthering the cause of more information, I give you Poitifact.com. This site, which is non-partisan, looks at all the claims by all the candidates and rates them on the basis of fact, not hyperbole. If you want to fact-check the Palin letter I posted the other day, they do so item by item. I will admit that some of the facts stated don't seem quite so bad once put into context, but all it shows to me is that she is no better than any other politician. I still don't like her for veep, and I will continue to support keeping her and McCain out of the White House.

You may notice that the Clay Aiken post is gone. Once again I underestimated C's feelings about him, and what I thought was a light-hearted issue is not. Out of my love for her I have removed the post, and will say no more about the subject.

And now I must get ready for work. See y'all soon.

A Verified, First Hand Account of Sarah Palin

There have been numerous open letters circulating about Sarah Palin. This one, by Anne Kilkenny, is verified by Snopes.com as genuine. While I don't support the McCain/Palin ticket, I will simply put this out there and not try to influence your opinion.

ABOUT SARAH PALIN

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because she is a "babe".

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is
fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She's smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative." During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later — to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus, borrow for needs.

She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal — loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State's top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla's Police Chief because he "intimidated" her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the "old boys' club" when she dramatically quit, exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the "bridge to nowhere" after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects — which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance — but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as "anti-pork."

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as "AGIA" that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned "as a private citizen" against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior's decision to list polar bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there's a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.

CLAIM VS FACT

o "Hockey mom": true for a few years
o "PTA mom": true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since
p "NRA supporter": absolutely true
o social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconsitutional).
o pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it.
o "Pro-life": mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation.
o "Experienced": Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska.
No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000.
o political maverick: not at all
o gutsy: absolutely!
o open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions.
o has a developed philosophy of public policy: no
o "a Greenie": no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.
o fiscal conservative: not by my definition!
o pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards.
o pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents.
o pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla's history.
o pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union doesn't make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

WHY AM I WRITING THIS?

First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny + Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.

Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that "Bad things happen when good people stay silent". Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings.

Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she can bump me out of. I don't belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that’s life.

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah's attempt at censorship.

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

CAVEATS

I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall — they are swamped. So I can't verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my "about 5,000", up to 9,000. The day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s.

Wild Weekend

On Friday I left work early, gathered up the family, and drove to West Palm Beach. It was a somewhat impromptu/stealth visit with a purpose. As I mentioned previously Celebhith gave me her old laptop when she bought a new one. Aside from using it to watch DVD's, her main use for the device is to play the Sims video game. The saga of trying to get her old saved files from the original machine to the new one is the stuff of morality plays and horror movies as one unsuccessful attempt after another was made. Finally I decided that I could not troubleshoot the problem from up here, and made plans to go to WPB. As it coincided with the CoA's birthday, Mrs. Marius arranged to get a rare, and much needed, weekend off, and we made a family outing of it. To those of you in the balmy southern part of the state, I hope you'll forgive me for not announcing my presence, but time was limited and I needed to devote my few hours to wrestling with bits and bytes, and to visiting with the Rents and In-Laws. Oh, and just in case you were curious, the trip was a complete success! Celebhith now has all of her simulated families back and the world is right again. :-)

After we got home last night, Mrs. Marius put her overnight bag on top of a box of papers she had retrieved from her ancestral home. Immediately the Kitties-O-The-Apocalypse showed us why it was foolish of us to buy them the many and various house-like toys they have eschewed over the years. Behold:

And one last little brag, here is a shot of the fruits of our labor in the shop.

Of course, with the huge show we have to build it won't stay like this long, but it is nice to bask in the cleanliness while it lasts. :-)

Peace out, y'all.

Brave New World

Yesterday George Takei married his lover of 21 years, Brad Altman at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. Walter Koenig was the best man, and Nichelle Nichols was the best lady, and the ceremony was performed by a Buddhist priest. I know that I am not alone in the Star Trek fan community when I say that I wish the happy couple great success in this wonderful time where two people who love each other have the right to proclaim that love publicly, and legally, and for all the world to see. Now if we can only get the rest of the country to move out of the 14th century.

Woots!

I don't know why this took so long to happen, but on a whim today I loaded City of Heroes into the 'new' laptop that Celebhith gave me. I really didn't expect it to work, but after a two hour loading and updating process, during which I went for a ten mile bike ride, it works like a charm! I just finished about three hours of play with Duke, and Targon, and Turtle. My fingers are stiff and sore, my back aches, I'm hungry and sleepy and ecstatic! I decided to make a new character, that's him above, for two reasons. Firstly I wanted to commemorate the successful testing of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, and secondly I needed to start off at first level again just to get my hero-legs back. The game has changed a bit during my absence, but mostly for the better it seems. The above toon is called LargeHadronCollider, and he is eight feet tall and shoots energy beams out of his hands and eyes. It's pretty freakin' sweet!

Ok, I'm going to grab a snack, and then some rack time. Y'all keep it real til next we meet.

Hello

Greetings, my friends, and welcome to a new era here at The Corner. You may have noticed a slight drop in the number of entries of late. While the actual cause of this was unintentional, I forgot to post on Tuesday, the result is one I have been contemplating for a while now. I fear that in my zeal to post daily for a year I have substituted quantity for quality. Many a day I would post any old cartoon or silly video I came across in an effort to live up to my arbitrary compulsion rather than in a genuine effort to entertain you wonderful folks. So I am abandoning my quixotic goal, and aiming instead for quality of content over number of posts. I hope you will find this a better option.

I have recently discovered a little online thing called Twitter. It's a service where people can post little snippets, I've seen them described as 'mini blogs', that go out to all the people who are following you. At first I was merely watching what others had to say, but soon I started sending 'tweets' myself. It's kind of fun. You can check it out at Twitter.com. My Twitter name is IMarius.

I bring this up because one of the people I follow on Twitter is a Canadian gentleman who posted a link to one of the funniest items of this political season. Behold the Sarah Palin doll:

It also comes in a Matrix style plastic trench coat, or a jump suit. To me I think it looks more lifelike than the real thing. :-o

So I hope you all are having a great week, and I welcome your comments and suggestions on how you thing things are going here at The Corner.

Peace, y'all.

Standing on the Corner Watching All The Storms Drift By

When I left work on Friday we were told to monitor Hurricane Ike's progress, since the proposed track of the storm had it hanging a rico and coming at us as early as Thursday. Well maybe there is a giant hurricane repelling magnet hidden in the sand at St. Pete beach, or we're just lucky, but now the beastie seems headed for a Texas holiday instead. Ah well, I was hoping it would at least get close enough for it to cool things off a tad.

I learned a valuable lesson yesterday. Do not try to blog while watching football, drinking beer, and struggling to stay awake. Our couch is one of those rare pieces of furniture that has a snooze-field(tm) surrounding it, and no matter what time of day I plunk down upon it I will inevitably find myself grappling with an over zealous Sandman. Sorry about the crappy quality of yesterday's post.

On a completely unrelated note, do you ever find that your internal stereo is trying to drive you insane? There is always some song or other playing in my head, but usually it is a quietish background thing. For the last couple of days, however, DaVinci's Notebook's song Internet Porn has been battling with that Mean Little Kitty song I posted the other day, and if my ears were speakers noone in the neighborhood would have gotten any sleep for days now. And to make matters worse, I tend to clench my teeth to the rhythm of the song in my head, and every now and then my jaw muscles ache. I don't know why my brain hates me.

And now, for your listening pleasure, here are DaVinci's Notebook singing Internet Porn on the Bob and Tom show. Enjoy.

A Time of Chaos and Inertia

So the Summer is over, and work has begun in earnest. It was a good Summer, if mostly sedentary. I had hoped to do one of my patented whirlwind tours of Florida, and maybe even get up to Connecticut to visit my ancestral home, but once gas hit $4 a gallon I decided that it would be best to stay close to home. I did manage to get to South Florida for a brief visit, but since gas prices in Palm Beach County are even higher I took it easy down there, too. I noticed an interesting phenomenon during the Summer. I didn't have much to do, and I fell into a sort of torpor. As bored as I was, and as little as I needed to do, the less I wanted to do. It was really weird. But the semester began last week, and I'm glad to be back to work. My students are well rested and in good spirits and we have a huge set to build for the first show, Reckless. I'll keep you posted as that progresses.

I discovered something interesting recently. I have come to realize that I am something of a skeptic. I used to believe in all sorts of things: esp, ghosts, cryptids, UFO's. You name it, I wanted to believe. As time passed, and hard evidence failed to show up, I grew disappointed. Eventually I realized that these things I wanted to believe in just didn't exist. It never occurred to me that there would be a name for this, or that there was a movement, but there is. The Skeptical Movement is a very real, if very nascent, and I am finding thousands of like minded folks out there. I have been listening to things like The Skeptics Guide to the Universe, and Skepticality, and The Geologic Podcast, and what ties them all together, and appeals to me the most, is that all of these people would love to meet aliens, or a ghost, or a real psychic, but the evidence is just not there. And I know that several of you are saying what I've been saying for years, 'what's the harm?' Well, I recently found this site, What's The Harm. It's a data base of stories of people killed, hurt, or bilked by pseudo-science, alternative medicine, and psychics. It's an eye-opener. And there are links to every story, so you can see the evidence for yourself.

One of the coolest things about my time in South Florida was that Celebhith needed to get a new laptop since the screen on her's had developed a pair of lines running down the right side and repair was not cost effective. So I helped her pick out a new one, and load the programs, and she very kindly let me have the old one, and that is what I am typing on now. Thank you, Puddy! :-)

Finally I want to recommend to all of you that like movies, or Star Trek, or music, or just interesting discussions with a British accent that you check out SimplySyndicated.com. It is a podcasting network with something for everybody. There is also a forum that is rather unique since everyone treats each other with respect, and while we aren't exactly boy scouts, we do our best to keep civil and classy. If you do join the forums(and all the content is totally free) I'm Adm. Marius. It's a lot of fun.

Ok, it's half time, and the Buccaneers are ahead by 3, so it's time to grab another beer and hit the head.

Be cool, y'all. :-)

All My Hopes

To my friends back in Louisiana, as the eye of Gustav winks overhead, please know that you are in my thoughts, and I pray that you are all ok.

Inside Sarah Palin

This information has been sent to me by several friends. I realize I am mostly preaching to the choir here, but this is interesting nonetheless:

Yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for "inexperience," here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.

Huh?

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:

* She was elected Alaska 's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1
* Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2
* She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3
* Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4
* She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5
* She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6
* How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7
